40th Anniversary Rally

What a super weekend, with over 50 boats with many eager members and friends ready to enjoy their weekend...and did they!

Barrie Johnson who is the stalwart when it comes to BCNS rallies spent the week before on holiday, arriving back late Wednesday night. Thursday morning he was there officiating with the putting up of the tent along with many members offering their services. It's these willing members who made this rally so special. Volunteers abounded....helping with the sales stand, bric-a-brac, cakes, jeans, lock wheeling and BBQ.
There are too many of you to mention one by one.

You know who you are so accept our big thanks!

The weekend started on the Thursday for many and continued through to the Sunday night. Friday evening saw "Mad Mike" doing his special 60's disco. Those of you who know him will know that he was the BCNS social secretary for some years until he left about 10 years ago to spend time with his then, new bride followed by two children. We saw him at last Bonfire Rally and we will probably see him again.

Saturday was thoroughly entertaining with DANDY, the Black Country Comedy Duo. They were so good that people were talking about them throughout Sunday.
But before this we welcomed Dave Dent our treasurer who accepted a cheque for "a substantial sum" from Gary Dodd of Abbey Roofing as a very kind donation to our Bonfire Rally. He was then presented with a life corporate membership of the Society.!

Then followed our President David Smith who began:
"40 years ago the Society set about persuading the powers that be that the canal system of this area was special and should not be allowed to waste away. I think that handful of enthusiasts did not envisage that in 40 years time the Society would have its Headquarters in that then, gaunt semi derelict Pumphouse. I would take the chance to remind you when you're locking down tomorrow, the water you release could end up anywhere in the system. You are on the top of an important hill."

David then explained that honourary life memberships were to be given to three special couples who over the years have made an enormous contribution to the Society and are active members Eric and Betty Foakes, Ron and Sheila Cousens and Barrie and Eileen Johnson. Ron Cousens was due to give a presentation on the last 40 years of the Society but owing to sudden illness he was not able to, I'm pleased to report as I write this that he is much improved.
The presentation was made to Barrie and Eileen and the following afternoon to Eric and Betty.

All in all BCNS celebrated their 40 years in style with some of the nicest boaters on the system.

Thank You to All
